It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a half-year break that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
