Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been told to avoid discussing classified matters in all cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Background

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, including vehicle use to communication habits.
