The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
